Create a Diet That Will Work For You, Here’s How:

It’s Human Nature to Rebel:

When your parent or guardian told you “you can’t be friends w/ that kid” what did you do? You rebelled, right? It’s just human nature to rebel against authority, it’s not a great trait that we humans exhibit but let’s be honest it is in our nature. You have been trying to break the rules all your life, my toddler tries everyday, so why would you follow new rules that take away your favorite foods?

I had this epiphany last week while testing a detox plan for a friend’s upcoming book, I found that by the 2nd day I was eating too much, craving naughty foods and wanting to rebel against the plan I am testing. One of the things recommended to remove from my diet was coffee. Well, I LOVE coffee, I am a mother of a toddler… hello! By day 4 I decided to rebel against the plan and have one cup per day, and I am happy to say following the plan from then on was a cinch. Why was it easier to follow the plan? Because I modified it to meet my individual needs.

Finding a Diet That Will Work For You:

Picking a diet plan should be a big decision, trying what worked for your BFF without modifying it to match your own needs first can be a recipe for failure. And while you are choosing one, know that all “diets” are just marketing. Think about Weight Watchers do you think they make more money off the memberships or the food they sell? Food, defiantly, it’s all over the grocery store and at the meetings.

If you deprive yourself of your favorite foods you may go back to your old eating habits. If you love pasta the Atkins diet will not work for you, if you love meat going vegan is not a good idea… get it? What can you learn from both of those diets though? Eat more lean protein and less carbs; eat more non animal protein and more nuts, beans, whole grains and veggies. Don’t just be a follower, use your brain, get the information and come up with your own plan.

The Best Diet in My Opinion:

What is the best “diet” in my opinion? No diet! Eat low calorie real food, move your body more and drink as much water as you can consume. Stop eating processed foods and eat only real food, here’s a tip- if there is no nutritional label it is a good choice. Veggies, fruit, whole wheat bread from the bakery, lean meat from the butcher etc.

One great tip I found along the way of my weight loss journey (thanks to Candice Kumai) was this calorie equation. Take your goal weight and add a zero to the end of it. Say you want to be 120 lbs, eat 1200 calories.

I have taken different tips from different diets, plans and role models and combined them, you should do the same, make a list 5-10 goals (not rules) to shoot for everyday for your own diet. Here are some examples of my goals:

1. Drink 2 glasses of water before you eat anything- from my Mama

2. Plate should be 25% lean protein, 25% carbs, 50% veggies- from Candice Kumai

3. Free day, one naughty meal a week (only if you’ve been good all week)- from Body for Life

4. Move your body more- from Jillian Michaels

5. Plan out your meals ahead of time- from Weight Watchers

6. Love your body, no matter what- from Myself and for My Daughter!

The Moral of the Story:

I have tried almost every diet known to man, the Cabbage Soup Diet, Weight Watchers, Atkins, Body For Life, South Beach Diet, Slim Fast, Sugar Free Diets… the list can go on and on. I was never happy with the outcome of these “diets”, but eating real food, moving my body more, and drinking water like it’s going out of fashion is the only thing that has worked for me. I am now a size 2, I weigh 125 lbs. At my heaviest I was 275 lbs and a size 20! Take it from a girl who knows first hand, there is no miracle diet. Stop with the fake sugars, the processed “diet food” learn and take pride in cooking the old fashioned way, with real products.

Check out my recipes for examples, great fast dinnerseasy to travel lunches and speedy breakfasts to keep you going all day. Because I understand that some of the structured plans may really work for some of you, I have included all the nutritional information needed to count calories, track protein vs. carbs or use a Weight Watchers calculator in my recipes.

Find something that works for you and stick with it! Don’t starve yourself, feed your body with what it needs, water, greens, fruits, lean protein and most importantly LOVE. Listen to your body, it’s the only one you have got!

    • AMEN Howard! Goals, not rules!!
It kills me how many people buy into the diet plans out there, they are all marketing BS!
There are no shortcuts in life, why do people look for one in weight loss?!?
      Happy Cooking,
      Audrey

  1. This is just what I needed! I had lost 48lbs and gained some of the weight back. I’ve been trying to lose the weight for a while with no success. I even thought about doing some so called “revolutionary diet” that involved eating lots of legumes. The second day in I stooped and asked myself “Leslie, what the heck are you doing? You know better than that”. I started paying attention to my eating habits and am now trying to modify them. I 110% with you. What works for somebody else may not work for me and vice versa. You have to study yourself and hold on to the things that work for you. Awesome post! I’m loving your blog Audrey! ;)

    • I am so glad this post and others of mine are helping you. Just keep it simple and you will see, the weight will come off.

I always recommend for people to make a food journal including calories and water intake for the first few months, and later on if they gain some weight or hit a plateau. If you ever want me to look at your food journal you can e-mail it to me via the “Contact” option at the top and I will give you my honest opinion of where you can improve.

      HAPPY COOKING!

    • Of course!! If you are on WordPress there is a button at the top where you can “reblog” posts too :)

As long as you give links back to my blog I am happy.

      HAPPY COOKING!

  5. I am so excited to start following your tips! I have been trying to get into the swing of counting calories/ losing weight but I never plan ahead which I think is a huge deal. I was wondering if you have any spreadsheets or something that you use to track your calories throughout the day? I would be interested in that if you have them available. Thanks for sharing your story!

  6. Thank-you so much for sharing your success story and all the fantastic recipes & tips. Almost a year ago my husband & I decided that we could afford for me to become a stay-at-home mom, which thrilled my 12 yr old ADHD son – finally “mom was at his disposal” and his grades & behavoir have greatly improved. Now after quitting my high stress corporate job, I now have had the time to devote my energies to a more healthy living for myself & family. I started a garden, learned to can, pickle & freeze our fresh produce & fruits; we got backyard chickens for healthier eggs (and natural fertilizer for the garden compost); I cook most of our meals from scratch; and managed to quit the terrible habit of smoking about 7 months ago. Even though quitting has greatly improved my health, it did unfortunately cause my metabolism to decrease. At first I managed to keep my weight stable and even lost a few pounds, but with the onset of winter and the decrease of outdoor activites, I’ve managed to gain almost 30 pounds over the last 7 months. With all the “New Year’s” fitness resolution commericals & blogs practically “thrown” in my face, it’s been so depressing that I haven’t been able to lose the gained weight. Hoping to get a little jump-start on my weight-loss goals, I decided today to pull up your Detox Water recipe to boost my metabolism & help with my morning workouts. What I found was your story “From fat to skinny in one year” and the more I read, the more confident and encouraged I became that I really can do this! I’ve also ordered the 2 books your recommended from Amazon and pinned dozens of your recipes; I can’t wait to add your recipes & tips to my program. So once again…THANK-YOU for taking the time to share and giving lost hope to a discouraged 49 yr old lady!!
